I mean look at that!

Give it the manual gearbox of the Supra, a good suspension upgrade and I bet it would be fun to drive.

What do you think about them Oppo? Future classic?

Not a future classic but I reckon a cost effective future tuner/drift car. Kinda like what the older soarer/SC300 is already.

V8 convertible with either a 5spd or 6spd automatic, 60mph in 6.2ish seconds. Not exactly blistering for a luxury V8-powered coupe, but it was on target for the competition (SL500, Jag XK8). They apparently have amazing fit & finish and are very quiet.

Top Gear named it the worst car that ever existed. That alone would be enough for me to stay clear of it.

Are they reliable? yes!

Do they look good? it's subjective. I personally don't hate the look.

Is it convertible? yes!

Do they have any other redeeming features? No, not that I can think of.

It seemed that the MKIV Supra owners were all about these when they came out. I didn't really get it. They seemed chunky and the styling did nothing for me at the time. But that black on red example... yes please.

Apparently, they have numb everything. Numb, vague steering, numb, vague breaks, not that fast, ride that's not comfortable, but still squishy and floaty, and people find them ugly.

No manual transmission would fit the 3UZ-FE right out of the box. You can't really convert the V160/161 off the MKIV twin turbo supra either, as the bellhousing is part of the transmission itself. You CAN swap in a 2JZ to replace the 3UZ, and then use the V161 or for cheaper go with an R154 off a MKIII Supra turbo. Just use a Chaser/Soarer/1JZ Supra bellhousing.

Yeah they've been universally panned by the automotive press. I feel you though, i still have a soft spot for them for a variety of reasons.

I gotta question one thing though. One of your pictures is of a RHD version. Wouldn't that technically make it a soarer? Or was it sold in RHD markets as a Lexus as well? Obviously there are lexus badges on that one, but that kind of thing can be retrofitted.

If you are looking for a sporty, engaging driving machine, this is about as far from that as you can get. Apparently, it's not a great cruiser either. Top Gear named it the worst car in the history of the world.

Keep in mind the W58's begin to break around 350/400hp, so no hard driving. They ARE a great transmission. Very very smooth. I had 4 (including a turbo Supra), and currently drive a very close brother, the W55 in my IS300.

The car is rad. Especially that last 2 years with the updated nav, head and tail lights, wheel options, and interior color options. The motor is one of the best motors i've come across in my 13 years of turning wrenches. At my 4 years as a Lexus Master tech, those cans have very few issues. it drives great but you can feel the weight and run flats. I'd put a set of soft compound Michelins for better grip and comfort. In Matador Red with brown leather and 18" multispoke wheels.

...but everyone is brainwashed with whatever Clarkson says and give it hell. Even if 90% of these 14-22 year old kids have never driven one and really personally looked it over. Long live Japanese RWD V8 Coupes!
